FRACAS | In-service Reliability module
Introduction
The FRACAS method was developed by the Department of Defence of the US. It is a closed loop system (implemented via software) that collects, analyses and records failures for specific items. It is intended to provide management visibility and control for reliability and maintainability improvement.
It is especially useful when applied in the first stages of a system usage, since the flexibility becomes more limited and expensive to implement as a design becomes firm.
The main procedures of the FRACAS system are:
Failure Reporting
Analysis of failures
Feedback of corrective action
The common FRACAS outputs are valuable reliability assessments, statistics and charts, and the main reliability parameters (MTBF, MTTR, MTBUR…).
When correctly applied (accurate failure documenting), FRACAS becomes an essential tool to apply positive corrective actions preventing further recurrence of the failures in the future.
